ಕನ್ನಡ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುವರ್ಣಪದಕ ವಿಜೇತರಾದ ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿವಿ ಸುಮಾರು
ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಶಕಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಹರ್ನಿಶಿ ದುಡಿದು ಅನೇಕಾನೇಕ
ಜ್ಞಾನಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ದೀವಿಗೆಯಾದವರು. ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ, ಭಾಷಾ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ, ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ
ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ರಚನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡವರು. ಇವರ ನಿರಂತರ ಭಾಷಾ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯ ಫಲವಾಗಿ
ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ದೊರಕಿದ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಆಸ್ತಿ ಹಲವಾರು ನಿಘಂಟುಗಳು. ಅಖಿಲ ಭಾರತ ನಿಘಂಟುಕಾರರ
ಸಂಘಕ್ಕೆ ಅನೇಕ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿವಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ
ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಬೃಹನ್ನಿಘಂಟಿನ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಸಂಪಾದಕರಾಗಿ ಆರು ಸಂಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು
ಪ್ರಕಟಪಡಿಸಿದರು; ಕೊನೆಯ ನಿಘಂಟಿನ ಬಹುಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ
ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿವಿಯವರ ಸಂಪಾದಕತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ನಿಘಂಟುಗಳು ಹೊರಬಂದಿವೆ. ಮೂರು ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು
ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಇವರ “ಇಗೋ ಕನ್ನಡ” ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿಯ ಅಂಕಣ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು
“ಭಾಷೆಯ ಸೊಗಡನ್ನು” ಸವಿಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿವಿಯವರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ
ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಗೌರವ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಶಂಭಾ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಸೇಡಿಯಾಪು
ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಡೋಜ ಪಂಪ
ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತರು.
“ಭಾಷೆ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುವಂತಹುದು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟಿನ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯಿಲ್ಲ.
ಅನ್ಯ ದೇಶ್ಯ ಶಬ್ದಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯನ್ನು
ವಿಸ್ತಾರಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ”, ಎನ್ನುವ ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿವಿ ಓರ್ವ ಉದಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಚಾರವಾದಿಯಾದ ಭಾಷಾ
ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿ.
ಕಿರಿಯ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನವರಿಗೂ ಆತ್ಮೀಯರಾದ ಇವರು ಬಡ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿರುವ “ಶ್ರೀ
ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಸ್ಟೂಡೆಂಟ್ಸ್ ಹೋಮ್” ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಅನೇಕ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಸೇವೆ
ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Lexicography
Involved in preparation of an authoritative, Encyclopaedic, Chronological, Monolingual Kannada dictionary on historical principles of Kannada Sahitya Parishat from student days. From 1954 member of the Editorial committee; From 1973 to 1980 Chief Editor; From 1980 to 92 Chairman and Chief Editor of the Dictionary committee. After he took over as Chief Editor of this project, for which Govt of Karnataka has granted more than Rs. One Crore, he gave a philip and got ready 7 volumes by 1992. The 9000 pages – 8 volume dictionary is now ready and has been reprinted during 2010.
